Just after breakfast a flat stone beside the path set out a saucer of paper slips. Lizards arrived in a polite line, took a ticket, and only then asked the moss whether the sun had reached the good patch.
We asked at the kiosk. "They nod to the moss first," said the park keeper, tucking a spare slip under a pebble. "If the moss nods back, the stone is ready. If it waits, someone is still warming their toes."
The next morning a small lizard returned, tapped the saucer twice, and waited while the moss found a quieter dimple, just left of the lichen, still sunny enough for tea.
