The Sports Page Asked Him to Wait

By seven the kiosk on the square had already set out a tiny chalkboard: rustle class at sunrise, one column at a time. The morning pages stood in a wooden clip, each whispering a hello to the clothespin before it dared to turn.

We asked a man who buys the same paper every day. "I reached for the weather," he said, "and the sports page nodded at me to wait. The clip hadn't finished saying good morning. I waited. The forecast felt politer for it."

A day later he came back and found the same clip holding his place at the crossword, as if the stand had remembered the bench he likes.
