Maple Street's hole-punch shop has started handing out picture frames no larger than a thumbnail. The holes, it turns out, prefer to arrive as windows.
We asked at the kiosk. A clerk with ink on his cuff said he used to mind the snap. "Now I wait," he told us. "The paper says hello, the binder nods, and only then does a little round view appear. It looks less like an errand and more like a courtesy."
The thing itself is simple. Each opening gets a tiny gilt edge. It greets the sheet, waits for the binder on the desk to agree, and becomes exactly one window — never a second, never a hurry.
The next afternoon a librarian came back with the same folder. The first window was still polite. She bought a second sheet of paper, just so there would be someone left to greet on the way through.
