Please Wait, the Spoon Has Not Nodded Yet

By breakfast the saltcellar had set out a row of trampolines no wider than a crumb. Each grain climbed, bowed to the soup, and waited for the spoon to nod before taking a single polite dive. Nobody rushed. The broth kept a quiet lane, and the bread at the edge of the plate pretended not to stare.

We asked at the kiosk, where a neighbor was buying parsley and a twist of twine. "People think salt just falls," she said. "Ours doesn't. If the spoon is still shy, the grains sit on the board and practice their hello. The soup tastes the same, only it feels greeted."

A day later she came back for more parsley. She said one grain had waited until dessert, then jumped into the leftover broth as if it had saved the best hello for last.
