Please Wait, the Spacebar Hasn't Nodded

By opening hour the library typewriter had laid out a row of footrests no larger than paperclips. The letters did not hurry. Each one settled onto its key as if the alphabet were a waiting room with very good manners.

We asked at the desk. "They will not become a word standing up," said the librarian, tapping the spacebar as softly as a doorbell. "The spacebar has to nod first. One nod is a whole sentence of permission." A man returning a cookbook agreed. He had come for a recipe and stayed because leaving mid-introduction felt rude.

The footrests, such as they are, are only a courtesy. A letter finds its key, sits, greets the gap that keeps words from crowding, and only then joins the line, exactly one word at a time.

A day later a girl came back with the same library card. She waited, the spacebar nodded, and the fern on the windowsill rustled as if taking attendance.
