Please Leave Three Crumbs If You Can

By first light the square had opened a little counter of its own, just wide enough for a sparrow and a nod.

We asked at the kiosk by the gate. "Mine arrived before the kettle," said a man with a paper bag. "I left three crumbs. He counted them."

The park keeper posted a polite card: greetings are free, tips in crumbs are optional, and the route prefers open vents. The next morning the same bird waited on the same sill until the window nodded first.
