Please Grind Softer, the Broth Is Still Choosing

Evening soup had gone unusually quiet. The pepper mill on the table was turning in a whisper, pausing between grains as if the broth were choosing a guest. One peppercorn leaned toward the steam, then another, until the soup gave a tiny nod.

We asked at the bread kiosk, where a neighbor was wrapping a warm loaf. "They are not stalling supper," he said. "The mill will not hurry a choice. If you hear a softer grind, sit still. The plate tastes kinder when the soup has finished picking."

From the kitchen notebook: mill polite; soup indecisive until seven; bread nodded back.

The next evening someone returned with a second bowl, just to hear the mill again. By then the whole plate already knew the warmth, and the bread nodded first, then broke.
