A Kiln That Asked for Indoor Voices

The pottery on Maple Lane has a new notice, written in careful chalk on the kiln door: please keep your voices down, the mugs are still shy.

We asked at the kiosk across the street. "I came for stamps," said a man with a string bag, "and stayed because the line was whispering. It felt rude to speak at full volume near something that is still deciding to be a cup."

The potter, who introduced himself as having clay under his nails on purpose, said glaze listens better to kindness than to clocks. "They are not late," he told us. "They are considering being hollow." A notebook by the window already holds remarks such as "the blue one waved first" and "please tell the teapot it sat up nicely."

By the next afternoon the same visitors returned to collect their orders and, without being asked, whispered thank you to the cooling rack. The mugs, according to the potter, blushed a little glossier.
